How about a glove revitalization contest...

Anything related to gloves (pre-1970) you can post here.

I started to clean up the back of the glove. This was pretty easy. I ordered some lacing so I am still just using temporary replacement lacing. I wish I could remove the webbing entirely to clean, but I'm afraid I'd do a hack job of putting it back in place. Nonetheless, it has cleaned up well. I think the web lacing was a long ago replacement job. I was a bit surprised at the pattern (maybe it is right). The lacing in the lower half, when it comes out the side runs up the side of the glove to the top of the webbing, across the top of the web, and then back down the other side. Does this seem right?

BTW, I found deerskin lacing in 3/16 of an inch width. Is this stuff going to work or is it going to be too soft? I was able to buy single 72 inch lengths online. I tried Triple C, but it seemed as if you had to buy significant quantities. We'll see when it gets here.

I think one of the best parts of fixing a glove is relaxing the lacing across the fingers. Must be some overzealous, safety conscious moms tied them so tightly that the glove eventually appears to be half of its real size. I put my hand in the Wilson and was surprised to see the width of the glove.

Even though it is holding up, I'm still worried about the stitching.

Thanks for the advice so far, this has been fun.

Just from looking at your pictures, my best guess is that the web would use two laces- one for the top section and one for the bottom.

The deerskin laces I've seen usually seem kind of soft and stretchy. They might look okay from an asthetic standpoint, and might be alright for a display glove, but I don't think that I would ever want to use them on a glove that was being actively used as a "gamer". They don't seem like they would be too durable.

I had the same problem with Triple-C. I love their laces, but didn't need them in the huge quantities they offer.

Here is a guy from eBay that I have bought laces from before. He offers them in various quantities and they are pretty nice laces. You might want to check them out.

Last time I purchased from Triple-C, I just asked the salesman If I could buy in lots of 50 & he had no problems with that. I think they advertise lots of 100 but just ask, they may even do fewer.

My Wilson is done

Postby burker72 » September 3rd, 2007, 8:17 am

I think I've wrapped up the Wilson. For the lacing I bought the tan HOH lacing. Because it is the wrong color I tried to age it a bit. I put the lacing in a small gatorade bottle along with a teaspoon or so of neetsfoot oil and shook it up. I only put a little oil in the bottle so the lacing isn't saturated, but by being able to shake the container, it did a pretty good job of covering the lacing. The bottom lacing in the web is the old lacing in the glove. I thought I was doing a good thing by reusing this, but what happened is the once covered portion of the lacing is visible now, and the color doesn't match. A better example of my aged lacing is the top lacing in the web and across the fingers.

I think the glove turned out pretty good. I'd like to learn how to replace piping, assuming that it is done without any equipment.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, and for listening.

I think the glove turned out great! I love the look of the glove, and I think you turned an old beater into a really nice keeper! Now I am inspired to do some restoration, too!
Yes, I still have my first glove.
