Dave, you handled yourself well in front of the camera. Not sure I could be that natural and calm. I saw a lot of my personal favorites as the camera panned across your collection.

Hi Mike and Kevin,

I wish I could actually display each glove with its best side showing in the glove lofts I had built for them, but as the collection grew it got more crowded in each of the lofts and I had to turn the gloves sideways to get them to fit in the lofts but still show a little of the webstyle of each glove. I have a few gloves that face forward or show their backside in the lofts but with about 110 baseball gloves of different web styles and glove styles I had to give many of them the old twist sideways for my display.

I adjusted for this factor in my glove book by completely emptying out one of the glove lofts and then placing gloves in the loft by a "grouping" shot photo. For example, all the sewn webs went into the glove loft I took the photo of them and then removed those sewn web gloves and put all the "H" or "I" web variations together and took a photo and reapeated the process until all the glove web styles had been represented. I ended up having 11 baseball glove loft shots and 1 vintage softball glove loft and that took hours to pull off the shots. LOL

When I started to collect gloves I wanted to focus only on the gloves in the loft and minimize other baseball memorabilia. I don't have much memorabilia, just an old bobbin-head, a baseball, few old softballs and a cast iron baseball bank. The only "things" in the lofts that I have is an old cardinal bobbin-head and a homerun baseball hit by Pepper Martin in 1933 at the Worlds Fair in Chicago.I Martin signed the ball after the game and my Grandma had these items for years and years. Grandma gave them to me before she passed away and decided to put the baseball in photo somewhere in each of the books I wrote on ball gloves. The only other item I used in a glove loft photo for my last book was a cast iron bank of baseball players and i placed that bank with my youth gloves.

The baseball player bank only shows a little bit in the tv segment and was not actually in a loft.

Mike, I was a bit nervous with the tv interview but I have taught college classes on tv before as part of my duties in teaching so I was hoping the segment would come across ok. You have some wonderful newer gloves and have gone where I have not. I just limited myself to the oldies due to limited budget and focus but I realize there are lots of folks who enjoy the more "modern" gloves too. Your efforts on sharing info. on this thread have been outstanding. Thanks for all your efforts too.

Dave,
Thanks for sending the link. Your segment was very well done and it was a lot of fun hearing your story while looking at the great gloves. Your softball glove collection has to be the very best in the hobby. It is very nice to see our piece of the hobby promoted in such a great way!
Congratulations again, on an excellent job,
John

John,

Thanks so much for the nice words. You know I have a lot of admiration for your efforts, time an energy that went into your awesome glove and mitt collection. Even though we collect for different reasons I am in awe when seeing your vintage leathers both on JD's website and in your new glove book. My hat is off to you for contributing another great resource to our hobby.

I keep looking for the mega softball glove collector out there as i want to talk softies with someone. I know some have enjoyed the old "softies" over the years as it took several greenbacks to add some to my collection. Other softies were an easy pick-up but some where just down right tough to get from the hands of a cool collectors. Some softies seem to stand out in the softball collection and nearly pop off the shelf with eye appeal. I love'm. (in the softies category, I even have an affinity for a few of the mitts. )

You know there have been times when I have gotten very excited about one of my key softies to add to the collection. It was a similar feeling I had with when adding a key baseball glove, just like I was getting a vintage crescent padded baseball glove for the baseball collection only I managed to pick it up for considerably less than a cp for example. I still feel the old softies are way under-rated and undervalued in the hobby and I will still keep looking for the vintage softie collector like myself. There must be a closet collector of these old sofies, I just hope they come out of the closet so I can meet them. Not sure that sounded right.

John kudos on your new book and I hope the tv segment adds another dimension in helping people become more aware of our hobby.

RFD preview season just aired with the glove story

Postby stockbuddy » March 7th, 2011, 3:34 pm

Hey Guys,

I just was watching RFD on my tv today and they just aired the first Heartland Highways season (901 episode) preview program via DISH tv. They had it marked episode 8 and original airdate of 2-4-11. But this program actually showed the first episode 901 episode as this is Heartland Highways 9th season. So they had a typo on the scheduling on my tv schedule.

My understanding is that DISH and Direct tv etc carries Heartland Highways nationwide so if you some of you want to try and watch it on tv rather than the computer and if you happen to have Dish or Direct tv. etc you might want to check your tv schedule programming in the next few weeks and see when the episode 904 (which had its original air-date as 2-25 and then again on 2-27) will be on. I believe it could be near the end of this month? You might be able to tune in the glove story if you get the RFD station channel 231 on DISH and I don't know what channel Heartland Highways comes on via Direct tv.

Anyway, the preview season that had about 30 seconds of glove story and showed some quick glove shots and I guess the glove lofts have already hit the air. LOL

Hi Guys,

Just an up-date on the glove story on RFD tv. The Heartland Highways Glove story segment should be airing on Dish satellite channel 231 this Monday (3-28-11) at 1:00 pm central time. At least that is what shows up on my Dish tv schedule. Of course if you are in a different time zone the show may air differently so you might check your Dish schedule. I think this Heartland Highways program is aired nationwide so maybe some other folks will check out the old gloves and get acquainted with our glove hobby. :D

Catch you later.
