1 ) How long have you collected vintage gloves?
I believe it was my 9th birthday when I received my first oldie but goodie. It was a MM9 triple crown winner mint except for the light writing on the side and a 30s Braves Negro League jersey. Many thanks to my father for inspiring me at a young age. So going on 15 years.
2 ) How many vintage gloves do you currently own?
Guessing as its a hard thing to estimate, roughly 400.
3 ) What’s the largest number of gloves you’ve ever owned at one time?
Probably Right Now
4 ) How many gloves were involved in your biggest deal (purchase, sale or trade)?
Picked up 200 hundred a few weeks back from a huge collector in Indy. Hopefully they were at a discounted price, still going through them all.
5 ) Gloves constitute what percentage of your memorabilia collection?
80%-85%
6 ) Do you collect glove related ephemera like boxes, catalogs, advertisements, etc.?
Yes, I love anything old that has to do with baseball! For love of the game.
7 ) What other types of memorabilia do you collect?
Bats probably make up 20% of my total collection, roughly 150. I like auto balls from pre 50s teams. Cards to match all of the gloves I have. Exhibit cards, magazines, any old baseball ads, pins, pennants, trophies, deadstock balls
8 ) What is your primary source for acquiring gloves (eBay, auction houses, private sales, trades)?
Secrets Secrets! joking! auctions (i like blind bidding in po dunk auctions, i love asking the ?s where the auctioneers are like I dont know what you're talking about, just has a dog on the button and I say max $50 and it ends up a W. Johnson) Ebay is a prime source as well, but thats only for higher end stuff as I think ebay has just dogged the collecting world and flooded the collecting world in general. I am an estate sale fanatic and hit up 10 a wknd. Garage sales in the summer as my area is pretty country away from the city, lots of old barn sales. I also put in my own adds on certain websites and newspapers once a month, majority of the time though I get ppl calling and sending emails of 60s non usa made gloves when i clearly state NO FOREIGN! Although I did pull an awesome KNOT HOLE gang glove with a green and white label, by far the only notable advertising find I have had.
9 ) Do you tend to collect gloves of a particular era? Which era?
I'd like to say pre 30s, however I do seem to pick up a lot of higher end 50s models just for kicks
10 ) Do you gravitate toward a particular manufacturer? Which one?
D&M, REACH, AG Spalding & Bros, Goldsmith, Stall & Dean, Early Rawlings, Wright & Ditson...kind of a new kick on east coast early manufacturers as well
11 ) Do you strive to complete glove “sets” (i.e. certain teams, HoF endorsements, etc.)?
HoFers
12 ) What player, whose name never appeared on a glove, do you wish had an endorsed model?
not really sure actually who Id love to have and isnt endorsed on a glove.
13 ) What is your favorite glove in the hobby?
webless crescents
14 ) What percentage of your collection are “keepers”, untouchable for sale or trade?
everything but my original starters are for sale or trade. lets start!
15 ) What’s on the top of your want list?
Gehrig Zipper and Ty Cobb
16 ) What was your best glove find or deal?
A Walter Johnson D&M for $25 on ebay 5 years ago, just listed as old baseball glove and it had a nice patch so I bought it, after a little cleaning the name popped right out!
17 ) If you could find a $19.95 price tag on a glove in an antique store, which glove do you wish it would be?
Gehrig Zipper!!!
18 ) What is more important to you, rarity or condition?
Condition and Rarity! They go hand in hand and just make the glove that much more near and dear!
19 ) What’s your most important glove pet peeve (i.e. nice patch, smooth lining, deep stampings, etc.)?
Everything, the gloves got to reach out to you and say keep me!
20 ) What are your feelings about ink on gloves?
Ink is Ink! Who really minds, I mean what kids dont write their names on gloves. I mean I know my father was worried about my Ripken being stolen when starting out as a kid.
21 ) In your opinion, what model is the “face of the hobby”?
Ruth G41! Mr. Sultan of Swat! He did start it all!
22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?
Exposure! Just like any hobby! We need to make sure kids today are in to the history of baseball, its not called americas pasttime for the heck of it! Baseball brought together communities in the past, it was a foundation for sunday afternoons after church. It is an amazing game and amazing hobby, once into you can't get enough of! I would also say, keeping people honest, how many dealers have no idea what theyre selling and then when a younger guy like myself gives my two sense they look at me like go screw yourself kid. It's just an unhonest world.
23 ) Are you going to the National in Baltimore?
I sure hope so! Id really like to put some faces with all the names!
