Wishing I could kick the ebay habit

Anything related to gloves (pre-1970) you can post here.

I think some e-bay sellers silent bid on their own items to jack up the price, like a baseball card auction. Another thing about the site is that the deals made make it harder to sell a glove off e-bay, even if you aren't gougin. If you have not at least heard from the seller after 2 weeks from close - good chance the seller is not a good one.

My main problem with ebay is that you guys keep driving up my buying prices ;-) Actually I've been pretty lucky with my shipping experiences -- knock on wood. My issues have been with lousy glove descriptions. The paradox is that the newbies have been better at describing major glove flaws than some of the established glove sellers (you know who they are). There are certain guys I won't bid on anymore because they failed to mention an obvious issue such as large name in ink, hole, or seam separation. I think they are hurting themselves in the long run. Anyway, I try to pay within 24 hours just so it is still fresh in the mind of the seller, and to sort of set an expectation. As for feedback, I agree that the seller should go first. I'll admit, though, that my corresponding buyer feedback is not very timely as I tend to do them in spurts

Believe me Ricky, I've tried to "find it myself". Pre-Ebay I'll bet I hit every PIAS, resale shop, flea market, and antique store within a 50 mile radius of my home. And every memorabilia show (back when there actually were some), I could go to within 100 miles (200 miles to Chicago). With less spare time these days (single parent the last 5 years) and $3 per gallon gas, I'll take the easy way out. Even with the possibility of dealing with someone who can't find a Post Office in less than 6 weeks. Hate to admit it but I looked at more interesting gloves in my first 20 minutes on ebay than I saw the previous 6 years "out looking."

I feel that ebay has been the best source of gloves. Yes, I would like to find a glove away from ebay, but it is awfully difficult to do. I guess I could start knocking at every farmhouse w/ a barn on the way to the school my son attends or every old house w/ an attic or basement in the Chicagoland. Yeah, I can see it now, " Excuse me, but do you think you have an old glove in that barn or basement?" I'm sure I'll get a response somewhere along these line " Are you crazy? Get the h**l outta here".

I've never had any luck at antique stores or flea markets. And I don't have the time to travel out of state for a show. We always dream of finding a glove like our fellow forum member Number9 did, but you probably have a better chance of being struck by lightning.

So for now, I'll continue to watch for gloves on ebay, even though I hate how much money they take away from us. ie. listing fees, end of auction fee, paypal, etc....And I'll continue to hound other collector for trades or sale.

Can't wait for JD's collectors corner!!!

I can't wait for the Collector's Corner either. My webguy is still working on it. I have been working with him on choosing the application we will need to incorporate into the site. It's a way bigger project than I ever anticipated as it's almost two websites merged into one. He's having to hack the code for these canned applications to get them to do what we want. IT WILL HAPPEN AT SOME POINT! The intent is for everyone to have their own page to maintain with upload boxes for traders and want-lists. It will be totally interactive. I sure hope we can pull something off at some point.
