The one that got away

Postby Rickybulldog » February 13th, 2009, 3:35 pm

As we approach on Valentine's Day I know many of us are scrambling to get those flowers, candies, or making that oh so sweet mix tape (Josh, don't act like I'm the only one dude!) for that special someone in our life. I'd like to start a thread and hear stories about the glove that got away from you. It could be a glove you traded, missed out on, wish you had back. Here's mine:

My senior year of high school I had seen an Old Joe Medwick at an antique store that I had always gone to for 95 bucks. Which seems like a lot, but at the time I was young and didn't know what gloves were supposed to be worth. Well anyway, I passed on the glove and was going to purchase it the next day. The next day I got back and my treasure was GONE! I was crushed. It was from that day that I started to collect gloves with much enthusiasm. Aw yes, we always remember the one that got away (sigh). :D

I could also say every glove I traded to Rob! Haha!

MIX TAPE!!! Jeez man you are going to make some of us look bad...haha ya I feel you...I can't lie I have been on the scramble  ....

Hmmm right now I can't think of a glove that I missed out on but I am sure after I give it some thought I will.

Dad still likes to mention to me that he sure does miss his favorite 3 finger I traded away...

The one that got away.......

Rosebowl antique flea market, Pasadena, CA, circa 1998. early morning. On my second round through, a toy collector who I maybe had met once years back came up to me out of the blue to tell me about a nice glove I had just missed earlier in the aisle (never happened before or since). I rushed back only to see a stunner EX+ D&M Wally Schang with large label and decker patent in the hands of a picker sports guy who had just picked it up. Of course, I wing-manned him hoping he would set it down. It drained much of the life out of me as he successfully haggled the $100 down to $85.

After the deal, I introduced myself and told him I'd pay big but he wanted to shop it around. He had no intention at all of keeping it and probably didn't end up getting as much for it as I would have paid at that point in time (not wanting the memory). It still stings!

And then there's a couple through my website where a non collector emails a glove picture of one that I've listed in my Wishlist. I give them a big offer because I needed it and knew they'd shop it around, they string me along for a while, and then end up eBaying it (without mentioning to me) for less. Why don't I bid you ask, to spite myself ... darn stubborn mule sometimes.

Note: it was hard fighting the urge to make fun of you thinking about gloves related Valentine's day, but I made it.

Nice Story Rob. Not too scared of being made fun of. I'm pretty thick-skinned; I can dish it out and make fun of myself as well. Just working off a theme, like we all do sometimes. ...........rbd

No, I thought it was a great post that I am really looking forward to reading other stories! Really. That's why I didn't actually make fun of you. I even added the bolded word as a homage to the other post. I was merely discussing my own personal demons -- that society has instilled in me -- to want to make fun of such a tough-skinned, reciprocating dishing, theme builder who did it in such a bold way.

Rob, I was there at Long Beach Veterans when Steve Neimand bought that Wally Schang mitt. He was writing the check and we were all cringing at what a great deal he got on it. He discreetly and jokingly shoved all of us out of there as to not jinx his deal. He long since sold that mitt but here was the listing from his website. Look at Item #4.

As to the one that got away, I was offered that big white D&M Grover Cleveland Alexander full web for $900 back in the 90's. I thought the guy was crazy at the time. Nine hundred bucks for a full web? It later sold for $3,500 by the way, but that wasn't was bummed me out. It was the biggest full web I have ever put on my hand. It almost went down to my elbow. What a beautiful glove. It's on the site. That's the one that got away.

Mix tape? What year is it again? Oh yeah, 2009. Make a podcast to woo your sweetie. :)

For some reason I'm having a really difficult time coming up with a story that fits here. I remember missing a Lowe & Campbell Lutzke style Hornsby by 2 minutes at a show a couple years ago. At the 2007 National in Cleveland there was a gorgeous crescent pad that I think was a webless - I wish I had had the cash to buy it. Maybe Mark or Paul ended up with it. Crackofthebat might have some better stories - I seem to remember the ones we ended up with rather than the ones we didn't.

Nice story JD. Seems like things were popping back then. Too bad about the 3 finger Brett. By the way that was pretty funny. I may have dated myself on the post. HaHa. Maybe I'll have it El Barto'd........ "FROM RBD"

Rickybulldog, I didn't know you did some DJ-ing! Mix tape, Wow! What did they call you then Jam Master Bulldog.

I know one particular glove that got away. I watched a Reach 56 w/ an internal crescent get away from me. I ended up being the underbidder and I'm still trying to get that glove from a forum member in Indiana. Hint: Josh!!

Rob and others, Great stories. Rob, you had me laughing with your story. I think the one that got away from me was not a signifcant glove to most others. It had a unique web and I can not tell you brand or if it had an endorsement, but it was a different web than I had. The bid on ebay was like 12.00. Yes, it was cheap. LOL I tried to pick it up within the last couple of minutes of auction and my computer froze. Somehow, I had the feeling this cool web glove ended up as a room decor for someone. LOL I looked at the history of the buyer. It seemed it was the only glove they had bought on ebay. Oh well. Maybe, I will see it again someday.

Great stuff guys. Dave, I feel your pain on that one, I had my computer freeze up a couple of times on some auctions.

Joel, how could you out me like that? Haha. I was a huge DJ back then. Did a lot of big shows like at elementary schools and supermarkets. I think my biggest "gig" was at my grandparent's nursing home. Although I had to cut out at 5p.m. because everyone went to bed. I'd scratch and mix. They'd cheer. I was on top of the game. Then the whole Biggie and 2pac stuff happened and it died down. That's when oficially, my friend, the music stopped........(sigh)

Haha. I'm just messing people. I never DJ'd or did the mixtape thing. I just merely threw it in my post to get "some" of you to smile, reminisce a little, and post. I guess mission accomplished! Take care my friends and keep posting. I love your stories!

By the way Joel, my friend, that was a good dig/jab; you should use that creativity/wit on coming up with some glove terms. I sent your glove out today as well.

Great posts. Dave, thanks for helping point out that it's not just about value, but about fit.

Jim, sounds like we may have both gotten Schanged, and as WBC used to say ... I feel your pain. My ordeal was definitely at the RoseBowl, at the section across the bridge where they mostly sell used clothes, third row in, third dealer in on the left from the North side. The memory is seared. I even went into full disclosure mode pulling out my handy pocket price guide No.5, but to no avail. The weather was mild and my heart was broken.

Fortunately, a night in shining armour, Mark Walters, traded me his "keeper" D&M decker that helped ease my pain. He like the glove himself, a lot, but somehow sensed that I needed it, needed it to fill a void.

Ricky, my friend, don't let them make you feel bad about your DJ past. I still remember that day we were going out to hit batting practice in your neck of the woods. When getting in your truck you quickly turned the channel of the radio, off what I believe was the Hanson Brother's "Mmm Bop." You tried to conceal it then and you're trying now ... I say you be you. Go Boy!
