Mantle and Kubeck Rawlings value ?

Postby doubleplay64 » June 8th, 2008, 12:48 am

Just picked up a Rawlings Mantle DF1...Don't know how rare it is but it looked good and anything Mantle is always a good choice . Anyone familiar with this one ? Also picked up a Tony Kubek Rawlings G-690 in beautiful shape. The Mantle is in VG condition but I'll clean it up and relace it. I know the Kubek is kind of scarce. Anyone have one ?
Thanks Don

It's been awhile since I've seem a DF1 Mantle, but I've seen quite a few on eBay over the years. My recollection is that it is a youth-sized, or possibly mid-sized, glove. As I recall, it has an unusual raised finger welting up the back of the fingers.

Mid-sized, lower-quality Mantle gloves are listed at $50/$100/$150 for, respectively, "very good/excellent/near mint" conditions. Youth models are roughly half that.

Kubek-endorsed gloves are listed as "common" in the Vintage Glove price guide. The G690 was an inexpensive mid-sized glove and would bring less than the high-end TG36 (Trap-Eze) or XPG12 Kubek models.

Book prices are $40/$80/$150 for "VG/EX/NM".

You can see that condition is a huge factor in determining a price for these gloves. So is the relative quality of the glove, with the inexpensive youth models at one end of the scale and the high-end gloves at the other. Both factors have to be considered and you can adjust the value up or down accordingly from the standard "book" prices.

The DF1 Mantle, unless in near mint shape, is not going to get anywhere near those book values. The ones I've seen the last couple months have barely made it to $30.

I think Dave Bushing started a thread on the Mantle DF1 a few months ago, you may be able to get some more information from that thread.
