Lou Gehrig Buckle Back Question?

I ran across a Lou Gehrig buckle back first base glove for sale yesterday for $700. I was wondering if it is worth that price. It has a block letter signature. it is in perfect condition no rips, tears or ink and the Lou Gehrig is very visible and clear. Any help would be appreciated.

Personally i would be cautious of a Mint Gehrig style
glove with "Block Letter Signature" Only because it's
common to find mint non endorsed gloves and tools
to add Signatures are readily available. Especially
Block letter tooling for leather. Maybe add a few photos,
So that the experts who post here could better guide you.
7 Franklins are alot to drop on a glove. It's better to be
cautious. Just because there are known sellers out there
that have misled in the past and it's been a problem with
forged endorsments on gloves. Good luck....

I do know that it is for sure an original vintage Gehrig model. It looks like it had at one time a signature endorsement also but it has faded away. I believe this might be a 166 model or a Banner model.

A lot of the vintage gloves from the 1930's had both block and signature endorsements on the same mitt. Gehrig was a Banner endorser so you should be pretty safe. If the glove is in good shape, I think $700 is a very reasonable price. My dad has a Banner Gehrig glove - if you visit JD's glove picture site, http://www.baseballglovecollector.com, you can check it out and see if it is similar.

If you like the mitt and have the $700 to spend, buy it and enjoy it. Isn't that what collecting is all about? I'm gathering from your questions, however, that you're either fishing around for a bargain to resell or not sure of your instincts and don't want to get ripped off. If either of the two later points is true, you should pass.

No, I am a glove collector and would like to have this in my collection because I do not have one. I do not have any price guides I usually buy what I really like but $700 is alot of money to me so I just want to make sure this is at least a fair price. The only time I sell a glove is when I buy a new one,I get rid of one due to space.

I understand the dilemma better now. If the photos on Jim's site are comparable to the one you found, $700 is more than fair. If it's as nice as Fred's, $700 is a steal. Put it in perspective, though, based on your current situation. Will it keep you from putting food on the table or paying the bills? If it does, pass. If not, buy it and enjoy!

If it's a model 166, then that is a good sign. My Gehrig is a 166 and has block letters on the top center and the facsimile endorsement going vertically along the left hand side in the crease. If it's in nice shape, I like it for $700.
