Favorite Pre-1940 Glove Makers

Postby tally » January 26th, 2008, 12:43 am

Over the few months I've collected gloves, I've developed certain early glove brands that I like more than others. My favorite brands have to be: Ken-Wel, A.J. Reach, Goldsmith, and D&M. What are all of your favorite pre-1940 glove brands?

Ummm...I like them all!

The Ohio-based brands have special interest to me, being an Ohio-based collector. Those include Goldsmith, Hutch and Ohio-Kentucky (OK). Post 40's would include MacGregor and Sonnett.

Hard to believe that Ohio was once home to so many glovemakers! Sadly, all have either fallen by the wayside, merged with other companies or left the country.

The old Sonnett plant in Ada, Ohio is still in operation as Wilson's football making facility, and all of their NFL game balls are made there.

I'd have to go with A.J. Reach. They used so many different types of leather and used just about every color. Their gloves ran the gammut of qualities and styles with lots of innovations. I love 'em.

For post-war, I'm a Rawlings guy all the way.

Since OK didn't start making gloves until 1938-39, I guess I could say they are my favorite. But I also like the Goldsmith and the Victor Wright Ditson gloves that I have.

Always loved Stall & Dean gloves and mitts. Butter-soft leather, intricate stampings and classic patches.

Pre War Favorites

For me I'd say my top five are Victor, TruSport, Spalding, Davega and Reach, with Horace Partridge a close 6th. Post war for me has to be Rawlings for the most part except a few Wilsons that I own.
