Second Thoughts...

Postby Moonlight Graham » September 17th, 2007, 4:15 pm

Good night everyone,

being relatively new in this mania, I've had second thoughts about using my 1952 split finger to play catch with my kids in the garden. It's in real good playing condition, but since it's about twice my age I was wondering if it was reasonable to use an old timer just for kicks.

What do you say? :?

Howdy from Texas, Moonlight ... ca va? I had almost the same question a while back and so I posted it as "What do you use when you play ball?" in this forum. I think you will find that thread on page two of this General Glove Discussion forum. I have included the link here, but I am kind of technology impaired and I am not sure it will work ...

Anyway, several people have said they do use their vintage gloves to play ball ... it's what they were made for, after all! :) And, if you are like me, you hate to think of your good old gloves just gathering dust and getting lonely while your newer gloves have all the fun!

If I were you, I would play catch with my old gloves, IF they were not among the rarest of collectibles ... IF the construction were still solid enough to withstand the activity ... IF they were endorsed by one of my favorite players, IF the endorsement was not almost completely worn away and the activity would not further damage the visibility of the stampings ...

If you like the feel and the look of an old-timer glove, then you might want to check into some of the new reproductions of the old gloves. I think Akadema makes some ... the following is a link you might want to check out ...

and all that is just my two cents' worth!
Yes, I still have my first glove.

play catch with the oldies

I use a rubber ball on my vints. I have a Nokona Riverboat Smith that I've been using for five years to warm up with wall bounces in the back yard. Before that it was a nice Wilson Bob Allison model. But I've tried nearly every glove in my collection to "get the feel". When Noah Liberman came down here for an interview for his book, first thing we did was play catch with the old timers. Great fun. Reason I quit using the Allison was I took it to a Frisco AA game here and friend I went with, fell in love with the glove and thus, you know friends and gloves, he wound up with it. It's in good hands though.
For softball I use a 14 inch Nokona AMG400K. If they made a 15 inch glove I would use that in senior softball. Rollie Latina always would tell the players "I'll give you an extra step"...meaning I'll get you a bigger glove.
