Old glove help needed

Postby kvzbs9 » June 4th, 2012, 2:32 am

Greetings!

Picked this glove up about 3 weeks on eBay. Thought it looked interesting and was fortunate enough to be the winning bidder.

I really need some assistance with identifying the glove maker?

The only stamping or identifying mark(s) that I can find on the glove is G84 in the palm.

It does have lacing along the fingers. Very thin lace though and there are slits in the fingers where the lacing goes through.

Also, Not a buckle back. It has metal loops for the wrist strap.

Here is a couple of pics.

Based on my limited knowledge of gloves. I am guessing either a late 20's or early 30's

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm far from an expert but your glove certianly looks like the JC Higgins 1684 Mel Ott model. It definately has the Unique Ott style strap in back. Those slits in the fingers were obviously not done by the manufacturer but by the owner of the glove at one time. (i've owned a couple like that in the past with the vintage alterations....might cut down on the value but certianly adds character) Hope this helps a little, Brandon

It definitely looks like the JC Higgins model - I've seen that back with a Mel Ott endorsement and Lew Foneseca as well. As Brandon mentioned, the lacing through the fingers was done by someone and not in factory - it also appears to be missing the web tunnels. More likely a late 30's/early 40's model. Nice glove - thanks for sharing.

Brett and Brandon,

Thank you so much for the information about my glove. It is a shame that it is missing the web tunnels. I also like the fact though the previous owner modified the glove for the lacing along the fingers. They did a pretty good job! As for the web, I guess I have to see if I can do some fancy lacing for the web.
The glove actually cleaned up pretty well and the leather is in good condition. I am very pleased with the acquisition!

Thanks again!
