1906 Stall & Dean catchers mitts

This partial 1906 Stall & Dean catalog surfaced on ebay and contained some interesting pics of their catchers mitts. I obtained some high quality images from the seller.

The partial page below lists the three patents associated with the S&D mitts. There is the 1891 Jason Draper patent for a grommet web that became commonplace on many turn of the century mitts and gloves. There are also two 1891 patents by Harry Decker regarding heel and perimeter lacing to allow access to the padding inside a mitt. The illustration below shows some of the heel lacing.

The inline heel lacing below was a variation of the Decker patent and more closely resembles the S&D catalog illustration.

The full perimeter lacing became the norm after 1906 for Stall and Dean mitts, such as the one below. the 1907 S&D catalog from JD's site features this style and abandons the partial heel lacing.

I bought the catalog just for the cover - I like the Griffin logo and wish they would have carried on with it throughout their years - it would have made a great tag!

I always called it the Stall & Dean winged logo but you are right about the Griffin reference. I just never looked at it closely. The head of a lion and wings of an eagle. it is an interesting mythological reference, the king of all creatures. I only had one glove with that particular logo still visible
