Help in identifying Reach glove

Postby Smokey Burgess » April 1st, 2011, 9:42 pm

Today I was in an antique store. I saw a Reach glove. Possibly a first baseman's mitt. Above the pocket, was a Reach logo. Above the logo was what appeared to be 4B. Maybe it was 41B. The color was rather gray, leaving me the impression it was a white glove at one time. Surely not brown leather. Can someone help identify the model, etc.

There is a Reach model 4B in the 1920-30's that was listed as pearl or cream colored. In the middle price range according to Joe Philips Glove Catalog Source Book.

Thanks. Youth or adult? Could you tell me what that value is? I liked the condition except for a quarter-sized tear on the inside.

I think it would be considered adult size from the catalog price. Without seeing it, the value could vary from $15 to $75 depending on condition. Factors such as an intact cloth patch, cloth or leather piping, factory stamping in the pocket, missing lacing and wear and tear come into play. Generally collectors don't like holes anywhere in the leather. The rough pecking order of collector demand is fielders gloves, catchers mitts and lastly, first base mitts. Most first base mitts have to be pristine to sell unless they are unusual or have a HOF endorsement.
