Les Mallon glove?

Postby ScottWNJ » April 1st, 2011, 11:51 pm

I came across a glove today while attending an antique show in Palm Beach, Florida. Since I've had almost zero luck finding any gloves in Florida, I was excited to finally see something. The glove is well worn, flat as a pancake, with laces missing from the heel and string where the laced web should be. It is a buckle back fielders glove and may be missing padding since the heel is unlaced. I can make out the signature of Les Mallon. Can't see the number, but I'm pretty sure it is a Goldsmith (only the word Smith is visible). No mention of Les Mallon in Joe's price guides, so I'm wondering if this might be a rare glove. Baseball-reference.com lists Les Mallon as having played 2nd and 3rd base from 1931 to 1935 for Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Braves. His last game was in 1935. The Glove Source book has a Goldsmith G30 Les Mallon model in 1936. I didn't see anything on JD's site, and nothing came up in a search on this site. My curiosity is peaked as to the rarity of this particular glove. It needs a lot of TLC and will never be minty. But it's always fun to find something out of the ordinary. Any additional info will be appreciated. I'll post some photos when I return to New Jersey next week. Thanks.
