Really Cool

Postby Mr. Mitt » February 4th, 2011, 6:48 pm

I wasn’t expecting a package today, been kinda slow on the glove front, so I was intrigued to find one when I came home. I eagerly opened it to find a book, published in 1981, by famed second-generation sportswriter Frank Graham Jr. Longtime glove collector David Seideman knows him, as well as my heroin-like addiction to Gehrig mitts, so he, unbeknownst to me, asked Mr. Graham to inscribe a copy of his book. I haven’t torn into it yet, but I can’t wait. Thank you so much, David, what a surprise!

He writes; With best wishes from the author – Who once played with a glove given him by Lou Gehrig – The glove itself later disappearing during said author’s absence from home during World War II, fighting in defense of apple pie, baseball, and first baseman’s mitts.

How cool is that!!!

p.s. That’s Mr. Graham, as a boy, with Lou on the cover of the book.

That is great! Does he happen to recall what make/model the glove was?

Well, we're pretty sure it wasn't a belknap. :)
Bet Frank doesn't remember.
The book is a really interesting review, not only of Frank's boyhood days, following the Yanks first hand, but of his tenure with the" Boys of Summer" Brooklyn Dodgers later as PR man.
Franks father, Frank Sr., was one of the best sportswriters of his day, right up there with "Red" Smith.
