Big mitt at AT&T Park

Postby Kenny Wel » January 29th, 2011, 11:12 pm

At the Cooperstown chapter SABR meeting today, we had a virtual tour of San Francisco's AT&T Park. In the left field stands, by the Coke bottle, is a giant mitt. Does anyone know if this mitt has a maker's brand on it?

I've seen it up close and there is no manufacturer on it. It's clearly modeled after a 50's Rawlings Playmaker (PM something). One of the other little league coaches was telling me some great stories about the construction of the glove. I heard there were all kinds of crazy things like bras in the plaster or fiberglass inside.

There is a faint MacGregor stamping in the steel and fiberglass glove in left field  As I remember the glove was modeled after Wllie Mays' three finger glove. Did I forget to mention the Giants won the World Series!

MacGregor? Really? I never saw that stamping. I can't wait to take a closer look at it next time I'm up North. Oh, I forgot to mention one thing....the Giants SUCK! Sorry, couldn't help myself. They sure played well in the series and deserved to win.
