"duck web" and other joined finger gloves

Postby mikesglove » October 15th, 2010, 12:27 am

In 1965 Melvin Heiman patented a new version of the duck web design. Like the earlier "Duck Web" gloves, this design featured the finger stall section sewn onto the back of a one-piece padded palm. There are various lacings forming the pocket and hinging the web but the front face of this glove including the web are from one piece of leather. The historical references cited in the patent documentation all have this feature.

The main reference cited is the Rawlings 1911 patent for a "Duck Web" glove. Just scanning both patent illustrations, one can see the similarities.

This 1965 glove certainly is an oddity. There are some other examples of joined finger gloves in various combination. The 1967 Denkert model below features three joined fingers

The 1953 OK patent below features the middle and ring finger joined.

Below is a variation by Norcon brand

Below is the Wilson Western "Sarge Connally" glove I once owned featuring the grouping of the first two fingers in an extended pocket similar to the example above

Below is an interesting 1947 OK variation of the Wilson design with the first two fingers grouped and the third and fourth fingers grouped. Kind of like Spock's Vulcan greeting

I wonder if Brett has seen an example of this glove?

There were a couple of other patents for the duck web glove with the most well known possibly being the Ratsch/Peerless model. The patent below is from Frederick Ratsch in 1911

A number of years ago I attended a glove collector get together. One of the attendees brought a pristine Ratsch Peerless "Duck Web" glove to the gathering to show and it had patent date stamping on each of the webs. He had bought the glove from a pawn shop and made an arrangement to sell the glove to Corey Leiby of the Antique Athlete. It was a thing of beauty and I have never seen a picture of it since. However, there are a few beautiful examples at http://www.baseballglovecollector.com

Diamond Brand also made the "Duck Foot" model

The Diamond Brand Ad below is for the "Niles Special" model DF. Harry Niles played for Boston of the American League and the glove was made to his pattern. The glove itself was not stamped with an endorsement, but came with an endorsed hang tag guaranteeing it's authenticity and workmanship. The hang tag would be a nice find for a collector, in addition to the glove.

I missed this part of the thread but yes, I've seen this glove - it is a DiMaggio model. I have one in my collection, JD has one for sale on his site and there was one in the recent Mastro/Legendary auction. There are a neat model - I looked for one for a couple years, couldn't find one, and now they are everywhere!

The canine in the picture told me he was going to name that group, the "Lucky Dog" group.
I recognize, Rob, Andy, Dave, Jack. Who are the rest again?

Carmi, Les Marquoit and son Steve, John Pope and Mike. The name of the person holding the duck web escapes me.
