Help to I.D. a Glove

Postby sulery01 » December 2nd, 2010, 5:53 pm

Hello,
I'm new here & was looking for a little help identifying the maker and age of a glove I found. It looks rather old but in the research I've done I can't find out anything about it.
Here's what It has written on it: A round stamped label with sporting goods & some design in it that resembles a W. It also has "Art Mahan" stamped on it as well as "Professional Model Hinged Pad". On the thumb is the # 60-4265.
I was thinking it is a Wilson but I could'nt verify it. I know Art Mahan played in 1940 & thought it could be from that year.
I know without a picture it is hard to know for sure but if anyone is familiar with what I have described please let me know. If I need to have a pic I'll figure out how to post one.
Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve.

The model number indicates that this was a glove sold by the old catalog retailer Montgomery Ward. The circular logo on the glove is a stylized "MW" and the words "Sporting Goods" should appear around the edge.

It is known that Rawlings produced many of the gloves sold through Montgomery Ward. These gloves were often identical to models sold by Rawlings, only with the "MW" logo and stampings replacing the Rawlings logos. While the historical data on Montgomery Ward gloves is fairly scant, the Vintage Baseball Glove Catalog Source Book verifies that Rawlings (for whom the historical record is nearly complete) produced a Mahan-endorsed first base mitt in 1941.

Sight unseen, I would be confident that this is a Montgomery Ward mitt, likely produced by Rawlings, from the early 1940's.

Hope that helps!
