Letter of introduction

Postby Kenny Wel » November 22nd, 2010, 10:36 am

Thank you for allowing me to join your group. I have been "lurking" for some time, so I have decided to step forward and register.

I have enjoyed viewing the pictures of mitts you have found, as well as the before and after photos. I have appreciated the information regarding mitt cleaning and restoration products and tips.

I am primarily interested in Ken-Wel items. This came about as I learned that the father of a woman I work with was the master glove cutter of a sporting goods manufacturer I had never heard of. After some research, I started looking for Ken-Wel items. Over two years, I have collected 2 mitts, 2 bats, a catcher's mask, an unused scorebook and a catalog. I am hoping to come across a ball.

I am currently working on reconditioning a Johnny Mize trapper to give to my son for his birthday.

Welcome aboard from one newbie to another!
That's an awesome gift to give your son. Nothing like the gift of a baseball glove from your father :)

Thanks, Ryan.

I am hoping that he likes it. I know old mitts are not on the top of most 18 year old's wish lists, but I think he will appreciate it. Baseball is one of the things that we share...both watching games and baseball history. He is a noted first basemen in high school, which is why I chose the glove model that I did for this project.

It is a rather easy project. Essentially cleaning, conditioning, replacing lost eyelets, and relacing. The leather itself is in very good condition. I plan on making a tag that is comprised of a vintage Johnny Mize card and Mize's statitics to attach to the mitt. I attach photos when I'm done.
