Crud/Mold?

Postby Smokey Burgess » November 23rd, 2010, 10:11 pm

Back in May, I purchased a one-inch web that I spent some time cleaning up. Today, I discovered some white crud, I assume is mold growth, on the inside of the glove. This glove was on display in a glass enclosed hutch/china cabinet.
I wonder if anyone has seen this before and can offer pointers on how it happened, how to clean up and avoid it from happening again?

Here is some background on how I treated the glove when I acquired it in May:
1. Cleaned with Fast Orange
2. After it dried, I rubbed with Vaseline
3. Vaseline remained too greasy, so I decided to clean with Fast Orange again
4. Applied Dr Johnson's Hide Rejuvenator (Tandy Leather)

Thanks!

It sounds like the glove was either not fully dry before being put in the case (mold - will feel like damp dust), or not rinsed sufficiently after using fast orange (cleaning product haze - will feel waxy). Either way, I'd recommend giving it a quick wipe down with a lightly damped cloth and see what it looks like 24 hours later. If the crud remains after 24 hours, the source of the problem is that you probably didn't remove all of the cleaning product back in May. Keep going back to it every 24 hours or so until it's gone.

I'd skip the Hide Rejuvenator and go with Lexol which will absorb quickly and dry quickly.
