I noticed that the $500+ bid was retracted because of a "change in the item's description", then the house of cards began to fall. Looks to me like that bid was simply probing to see what the other high bid was. This has happened on some of my past listings, and I have to say, it kills the momentum and validity of the auction. If it were my auction, I would have ended it too. Doesn't necessarily mean that the box has been sold yet.
That said, the catcher's mitt is not Ruth endorsed and the box is not for a catcher's mitt, it's for the RB1 Ruth basemitt. To me, that does not change the perceived value of the box. It's in rough shape, but it's still a vintage Ruth box which is extremely desirable. In my opinion, the guy who retracted was just screwing around because even if he didn't notice these points from the photos until after he placed his bid, he would have eventually been outbid based on the value of the box alone.
