A couple questions from a newbie

Today, I bought my first 1 inch web glove. Now I've got a full web and a one inch. Joel got me hooked!
This new purchase came from a local antique mall. The glove looks pretty good. No holes with nice soft leather, it is rather dirty. After handling for a few minutes, your fingers show the dirt. I've read over in glove conditioning about vaseline, lanolin, etc. But, what about cleaning the glove prior to applying a conditioner/protectant? I would love to hear recommendations on next steps.

There are lots of different choices. I like the Fast Orange Smooth - I rub it in with a soft sponge and take off the excess with a microfiber towel. It's best to let the glove dry completely before applying the conditioner of your choice. I know that Lexol has a cleaning product as well - I've had better success with the Fast Orange.

I've never heard of Fast Orange Smooth. Is it available at large chain stores?

Also, while cleaning, is there fear of the 100 year old leather tearing? If so, what is the best technique to avoid having that happen?

I can't wait to get started, but want to avoid a major mess-up.

for ingrained dirt, try basic alcohol on a clean cloth. For lesser dirt, and to recondition, try Horseman's One Step. Usually about $7-$8 for a small vat. Available online or at saddle shops. works wonders and doesn't leave any tacky feel to it.

John- You can buy Fast Orange hand cleaner at your local Auto Zone. There are two different kinds, a smooth and w/ pumice. I use both. For light cleaning you would want to use the smooth. Just a small amount on a clean damp cloth and rub it in gently then wipe it off. Do small areas at a time.

Like Joel said, Fast Orange can be purchased at Auto Zone and other automotive stores. I've seen it at Family Dollar and some other dollar stores too. I know the Best Hardware stores carry it too.

I just picked some up for $2 at Dollar General.
What about my oncern about the 100 year old leather tearing? Thoughts?

It should be fine - just start off gently. If the glove feels like it is to brittle to condition then be careful. However, from my experience, most gloves are more than willing to be cleaned and rarely rip.
