Bob Dillinger Dies

Postby softball66 » December 11th, 2009, 9:02 am

SCD recently carried story that Bob Dillinger, a third baseman for the St. Louis Browns and several teams died at age 91. Dillinger, as some of us could note, was the endorser of one of the top-level Rawlings gloves of the 1950s, the "BD" and as used by the professionals, the "BDX". Funny his obit stated that "his speed and batting did not overcome poor fielding."
Brings us to the point as to the motive of Rawlings signing and assigning gloves to its glove line and markets. It honed in on St. Louis players, the more notable being Stan Musial and Marty Marion of the Cardinals but then you have some of St. Louis Browns like George McQuinn and Dillinger who were never close to being stars.
Lonny Frey, whose name was on the popular premium Rawlings LF model is another long-life player who may still be alive in his 90s.
Rawlings finally did sign a New York player guy from Oklahoma that helped balance the popularity scale for its gloves.
