Upcoming Show Listings

Postby ScottWNJ » November 6th, 2009, 11:47 pm

Would it be possible to have a section that lists upcoming major or not so major collector shows? It's always great to see what everyone finds at these shows, but with a list in advance, it would be easier to make plans to attend some of them.

Here's the GBSCC (Greater Boston) website. Don't expect updates from them, they usually just release the next show date.

Here's Brimfield. It's not really sports related, it's more general antiques.

The Philly show. Never been to it.

The National. Brett and I will be set up there next summer. Come by and say hi.

That's what I have off the top of my head for shows in the northeast. I'd love to see what other shows people would add to the list. There must be some NYC, SoCal, or Chicago area shows too.

The Springfield Extravaganza in Ohio is a great antique show too. Held three times during the summer.

We do not have any shows in So-Cal. NONE! If there are any, I would love to hear about them. We used to have all the great Baseball Card Shows in the 80's and 90's. I really miss them. We do have a Sunday circuit of flea markets though.

I'm really surprised by that. I would expected you guys to fill at least a spot on the calendar every two months or so.

Nope. They even took Anaheim/L.A. off the rotation for the National. Sports Memorabilia used to be so huge here. I was at the '91 National where all the attendance records were set. It was horrible at the time. Now I miss it. When was the last time California appeared in the Show Directory in SCD? Been awhile, then it was only a little mall show in San Francisco or something. Absolutely nothing out here anymore.

Bummer. I was hoping the TBD on the National calendar was going to be Anaheim.

Was going to post something about the National not being in Anaheim, but this looks like a nice thread. I'm absolutely pissed that they dropped us from the National! From someone who started late in the game, I only attended one out here and would have loved to stay longer than I had at the one I did attend. I totally understand the whole argument that it's a pain for East coast dealers to lug their stuff out here, but don't guys like Kanuit do the same thing going the other way? Probably why they chose the midwest to meet everyone in the middle. I dunno, to me if you set a record for attendance in one area it may be a hot place to get buyers and new interest. Just my 2 cents!

Are you ever at this show? Now you're talking about my turf- Springfield is only about 50 miles east of me and I try to get to every one of these. It's a great show if you like antiques in general, but is usually thin in the glove department.

There was one guy that had the same three or four one-inch web generic gloves in the same booth for four or five years in a row, up until this summer when they were gone.

Another guy is always there that brings big plastic tubs filled with a couple hundred gloves, mostly 1950's to present, with a few earlier gloves mixed in and a big variety of bats, pennants, etc.- and wants top retail prices for all of them.

At the last show I saw maybe 10-12 other gloves, nothing of real note, scattered among the hundreds of dealer tables there. But the search is half the fun!

Another big Ohio show is the Scott's Antique Market, held indoors during the winter months at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus. This is a huge facilty that advertises somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 dealers. The first show of the winter season is the first weekend after Thanksgiving.

Of the hundreds of dealers, I've seen two or three specializing in gloves or sports equipment over the years, plus picked up a few odd and end gloves here and there. Gloves aside, this is a great antique show in general.

My wife and I lived in Bexley for a couple years. We made it out to Springfield 5 or 6 times while we were out there. Great show. I think I only found one or two gloves total but the picking is fun. One of the gloves was purchased from the guy with the plastic tubs. You're right, it wasn't cheap.

Thanks for the great response and the links to the show sites. Philly in December is an easy one to hit for me. I haven't been to Baltimore in years, so the National is a good reason to go. Brimfield on May 11 might be a problem. It's my wedding anniversary and I'm not sure my wife would want to spend it glove hunting. :D

Tell your wife that you're taking her out for a long weekend in central Massachusetts. Use the words "quaint" and "bucolic". Women love that. :D

If that doesn't work, there's always July and September.

There was a long thread this summer on the Net54 board about the National and it's locations - if you search National + Anaheim I'm sure you'll get it to appear. There is talk of maybe having it in Las Vegas at some point - that would be interesting. Seems like it's pretty much going to rotate between Chicago and Cleveland for the next couple years. I would love it to be in a different place each year.
