Thousands of gloves out there?

Postby okdoak » October 16th, 2009, 1:34 pm

I got to thinking about this while rereading "The good old days" thread. The first year that I started looking for gloves (1994) I ran into an elderly gentleman at a local antique mall. He saw me looking thru a pile of beat up 1960's gloves and struck up a conversation. Said he liked the older ones and in fact had over 200 pre-war gloves in his collection. I probably had one or two at that time, so needless to say, my mind pretty much boggled! If I remember right, he lived in a small town about 40 miles from me. A while later I found out that there was another collector who was (and still is) pretty well known in the hobby who lived about 10 miles from me. So within my little corner of the glove collecting universe there were 2 collectors who had hundreds of gloves between them (plus my two)! I'm sure that there are many other collectors across the country who have quietly picked up a lot of gloves over the years. How many thousands of gloves that we never hear about are out there?

That very question is what keeps us going!

In 1994 or ‘95, Glovecrazy and I found out we lived in the same city of Huntington Beach (at the time) as a result of one of Joe’s Glove Collector Directories.

More on this next week…

I have been wondering where the folks on Ebay for instance seem to find the dozens of rare gloves they come up with so often. And it's mostly the same people/dealers. I happen to live in the smallest state Rhode Island so I guess it's pretty limited here. We don't have that many "large" flea markets here anymore. I tried the antique shops and malls with little success. There a guy on ebay that always hs some pretty good stuff......I think he's in Florida so ther ya go. Does anyone actually go to estate sales or auctions And if so how much is there to be had ?
I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball."
