The Good Old Days

Anything related to gloves (pre-1970) you can post here.

I agree with Ricky that it is annoying to be pestered like that (I speak as both the annoyer-sorry!- and the annoyee). Worse than that though is to give a fellow "collector" a deal on one just to see him put it up on ebay a month later! That happened to me recently and it ticks me off to no end.
Thank you Mr. Mitt for comparing gloves to sculptures in the Cobb thread. Well said! Also agree that the thought that there are still unfound gems out there is a big part of why I became hooked on gloves to begin with.
Maybe the glove registry could keep the owner's name anonymous if they would rather not be identified?

RBD & OKDOAK, there are obviously pros and cons to showing your hand. Some people are modest, some are concerned about letting others know what they have(which is cool with me) and others are happy to share their pics with everyone else in the spirit of participating and advancing our hobby. Pestering might be annoying to some who don’t want to part with their stuff but welcome for others. I think it’s nice to know who your audience is. It makes that glove just a little bit more liquid – easier to move if you ever decide to part with it. Every once in awhile, that person will really bring it and you can be pleasantly surprised. I have had great gloves offered to me that I couldn’t dream of because they were after one of mine. I see both sides of the argument.

Also, if anyone wants to remain anonymous in the Glove Galleries, just drop me a note and have me remove your name from a glove. I’ll change it to Unknown. I know who most of the Unknown’s belong to. They are just people who told me they wish to remain anonymous and I respect that. It’s easy enough to change.

I'm in JD's corner on this one. I think that is because our collections are pretty static - we're hoarders. :) However, once in awhile you get that email from someone who says "Hey, I really would like this glove for my collection would you be willing to swap for this." An the "this", is something that fits really great in your collection. The swap works for both parties, everyone is happy, and it wouldn't have happened if the glove was pictured somewhere. This is probably more the exception, rather than the rule, but I've added a couple nice pieces this way.

I feel you, okdoak, on the trade where the glove ends up being sold soon thereafter. When I sell a glove, it doesn't bother me with what happens to it. But I must admit, I feel a little upset when a trader is put on the block soon after the trade has been completed - probably because I really liked the item in the first place. Oh well.

And as far as those pestering emails, I guess I don't have much good stuff because I don't get them.

Collectors are a strange breed. On one end of the spectrum you have people who are willing to share their finds and be a part of the community and then there's the other side which wish to be anonymous and never reveal what they have. Over the years I have gotten over the secretive thing and trying to figure out why some are more willing to share than others, but I have given up. It is what it is. You make the hobby what you want it to be. For the past couple of months I have just dealt with people that I have clicked better with for my own sanity. I don’t reach out as much because some people prefer their privacy and that is fine with me. Creating those lasting friendships with people who share your same interest is what makes collecting enjoyable for me. Hell, JD and Rob are some of my best friends in the hobby and live closest to me, but I talk to Joel like he just lives up the street from me.

The registry is a wonderful idea, but I feel it will be the same cast participating just like the forum and JD’s site. (I’ll just keep to the serenity prayer)

As for the emails, I would absolutely love to have people drop me a line on my gloves or make a trade proposal. Unfortunately, my emails consist of former classmates trying to locate me or pill offers for you know what.

My only pet peeve with buying and selling is I don't like when people don't have a price and tell me to make an offer. If you have a price and best offer, that is perfectly fine for me. But, the whole make me an offer bothers me because you run the risk of offending someone (to me, when someone gets offended the person already had a set price in mind (which they should have just told me in the first place).

As for trading, the whole trading then selling thing I have learned to let it go. In the beginning, the old me would have been pissed and bothered. But having seen so many gloves trade hands and seeing how things go, these gloves keep rotating and eventually find their owners or a permanent residence. Plus, if you traded it in the first place you probably didn’t love it that much compared to the item you got in the trade. Also, nowadays you can win the glove you traded for cheaper if it’s put up on Ebay!

Hi Ricky,

I agree with you. Met some great people in this hobby and done some trades and purchases. Hey, cool old glove you picked up with the full web and added pad in the palm. Cool. Look forward to seeing some of your latest additions. Hope your little one is doing well too.

If I lived near you guys, I would love to get together with you, JD and Rob. That would be fun.

Thanks Dave, my daughter is doing well. Trying for "Daddy", but I guess I'm "Papa" :D

Yes, looking back at the great folks I met through my low budget site was a kick for me when I was starting out. I remember this one guy by the name of stockbuddy who was looking for an original doak type glove. I told him I had picked one up on Ebay along with a color stitched baseball. I kept the ball and sold the crispy Doak for a few bucks. That thing must have been in a barn for a while because it had curled and stiffened in that position. Also a lil varmit had chewed it on the outer thumb. The funny thing was I think we were both grateful at the time with our cool old treasures. Ah yes, the good ole' days!!!

Ricky,

Was that me that got that glove from you a long time ago. LOL Gosh, I don't recall that trade but we sure may have. LOL Let me know if you want to go for another trade round, I might even put a book in on the trade. :D . JD and I are just are finishing a trade. Love the trades when both glovers find the right glove to help the collections for each other.

Drop me an email sometime and let me know what you have been up to with collecting gloves.

Catch you later.

Will do Dave on the email. I don't think it was a trade, but more of a purchase/ helping a glover out. :D It had a doak look, but no stamping. That thing probably has been upgraded by now, but it probably wasn't as memorable as the Groh glove you got from me. My friend Dave, the kooky web guy. LOL.

Personally, I can go full disclosure on my gloves, no problem. I love to post pictures of them and I'd post them all but for the fact that there'd be a lot of yawning after the first few. Just thought that a few other collectors might rather post theirs anonymously for whatever reasons.
I guess I've just had a couple of bad experiences with trading and would just as soon avoid more of them. On the other hand, I've bought or traded gloves with some really great people (Brett, JD, RBD, Joel, Carmi) and would absolutely love to do so again. Hey, lay that G C Alexander on me and I'll dig as deep as I can to find something you'll like in return!
