Glove Collecting in HoF Induction Speech

Postby Mr. Mitt » July 27th, 2009, 12:30 am

While watching the Baseball Hall of Fame induction today, I had to rewind the DVR after I thought I heard a nod to glove collectors. Joe Gordon's daughter, while speaking on behalf of her dad, said,

"Some of you remember, or even may have owned, one of the old
style five finger Joe Gordon baseball gloves. I’ve had so many
people tell me they still have their glove. "

Pretty cool! The more I thought about it, though, there's nothing profound in the statement. We all already know how common Gordon gloves are!

Sorry, couldn't resist that! Seriously, though, Henderson, perhaps the greatest player of my generation, was humbled by the event. And Jim Rice finally got his day! As a Yankee fan, Rice and Brett were the two players that were most feared, and most respected, when they stepped up to the plate. Great to see him where de deserves to be.

That is neat. Gordon would definitely rank up there as one of the players with the most endorsed gloves. Very cool that his daughter would mention it.

Gordon Gets Respect

Postby softball66 » July 27th, 2009, 10:59 am

Yes, many Joe Gordons. . .but here's one that I have displayed in my office
only a few feet away. This is an MW Gordon with almost patent leather finish on the front, appears almost ceramic. I got it for practically nothing, a little cleaning, the stamping clear and silvery and Doc Golomb relined it for me.
Good to See Flash Gordon go in. Bill James has claimed he's long overdue.
I've got a great Sport Magazine cover from 1948 showing the great HOF DP combo of Boudreau and Gordon with the Indians.

Great Gordon Joe. I love Joe Gordon and think we all need at least one Joe Gordon glove in our collections.

That was totally cool when his daughter spoke about the gloves. I loved that part. His entry was long overdue in my opinion.

And Henderson, despite never using an “S” at the end of his words gave a great speech in my opinion. Glad he was humbled. His speech put him back in a more positive light for me.

What a talented man!!

Postby softball66 » July 29th, 2009, 3:38 pm

Glover Jerrold Booher sent me this and I couldn't help from reprinting a bit of this newspaper story from the Idaho State Journal about the multi talented Joe Gordon.
"He (Gordon) attended the University of Oregon, where he lettered in baseball, football, soccer, gymnastics and track and field. He played the classical violin for the Portland Junior Symphony Orchestra. Later in life, he would learn how to fly multi-engine planes. He would teach Judy (his daughter) how to ride a hors and delight her with ventriloquist acts."
Gordon became a very accomplished fly fisherman later in life.
And pull up some of Joe's stats and baseball accomplishments. How the Hall of Fame voters could have ignored this man are puzzling to me (and to
the noted analyst Bill James)!
