Help with Duke Snider 6 finger

Postby daveob » May 5th, 2009, 7:42 pm

Hi all
Looking for some info on this glove. There is no tag or any trace of one (where the label is supposed to be looks like it was never attached, No remnants or broken strings) The only markings is autograph model REG.076 Top grade Cowhide and Duke Snider. It was stamped something in the pocket but I can't make it out.
My problem is I listed it on Ebay as a 50's 60's glove but, someone emailed me claiming it's a fake a knockoff. He also said he wanted it and will be bidding. It was in a collection from the 50's. I am getting other questions but none saying its a knockoff. If it is I would like to add that to the listing. Just looking for some imput. Thanks in advance dave

I did see the eBay listing for this, but didn't realize that it was being sold by one of the forum members here.

Since the Rawlings Trap-Eze web was introduced in 1960, and this is an almost identical copy of that web, it would be safe to assume that the glove was issued after that date.

I do seem to recall seeing similar gloves from the early 60's that were import models (made in Japan). If my memory is correct, some of these gloves even bore Snider's signature. Possibly, the makers name was "Star Line".

But I don't really see this as a counterfeit or "knock-off" glove. I think that it was just a glove issued by a company other than Rawlings, possibly after Snider's contract with Rawlings had expired.

This is mostly conjecture on my part, based on the memory of having seen similar gloves in the past. The amount of information on the early import glove brands that proliferated in this era is pretty much zero.

If there is more to the story, or someone has a better I.D. on this glove, I would be most interested in hearing it!

Intriguing Glove

This glove raises several points all nicely covered by Bret. What helps here is the Player Autograph Glove Finder Book we put out several years ago (and still available by the way).
Snider evidently "pulled up stakes" on Rawlings it seems in 1962 and quit his endorsement with the company and appears to have signed up with Hutch, Kennedy (Ken-Wel) and several importers.
Here's the Snider listings from the Glove Finder -- omitting Rawlings --
Barco, Buffalo Leather, Kennedy, Marathon (probably made by Rawlings for the Montgomery Ward stores), Old Reliable, Regent and Bellknap.
I would guess maybe any of the importers like Regent, Bellknap, Buffalo etc. could have put this glove out.
"Knock off". . . sure. A knock off of Rawlings Trap-eze model which many of the importers did. They didn't seem to mind knocking off patented gloves.
These were mostly done in Japan.
So some interesting questions raised here. Why did Snider leave Rawlings the big established company? More money for an endorsement seems to be the likely answer.
I'm missing out on the boomerang Kangaroo by Catch 2575 question?
Does Dave have another glove listed?
I know Nocona introduced a Kangaroo glove in 1957 because I played with one. MacGregor came in about the same time with Kangaroo leather.
