Wilson GC models

Postby candlestick » December 23rd, 2008, 5:03 pm

OK, who can help me out here. I have run across an old wilson for sale on ebay stores ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0329925859 ). This is a Harvey Kuenn Personal Model GC 1298 but when I look up the model number in the Vintage Baseball Glove Catalog Source Book I don't find any GC's at all. Wilson's Axxxx series starts in 1949 and prior to that model numbers on gloves were a three digit number with no letter prefixes. What gives?

Western Auto

These were "special" Wilson (thus branded) gloves that were sold through Western Auto stores. Kept separate through the mfg. process with the GC stamping. No need to have them in their retail catalogs as they were not available to the general retail trade.
Same thing with Rawlings KM marked gloves. Not in the catalog and sold only through K-mart stores. Happened with other mfgs. too such as Nocona with its J series numbers.

Cool! Now that's a bit of history I would have never figured out without the help of the forum. Now for the next question. Where are these in terms of quality? Top, middle or low end of the normal wilson gloves?

Thanks!
