I'm a huge Redford fan, don't get me wrong. I'd read Malamud's book before the movie came out and wondered how Redford would do in the part. Here's what one reviewer wrote, for instance:
"We know much has been made about Redford being too old to play Roy Hobbs. But much of the story asks you to believe in incredible things, so to me, this is a minor issue."
Redford was 48 when this movie was made in 1984 and he looked like he had played -- he wasn't like Gary Cooper or Tim Robbins -- but he just looked strained to me and this was supposed to be a reincarnated B. Ruth character he was portraying. I'm 69 now and have played senior softball since 1992 so I've seen a lot of old ballplayers of various abilities. I may have been expecting more and my comparison maybe was unfair of him to Costner.
You wanna see a warm "sports" movie (fishing) see the one Redford produced of "A River Runs Through it." One of my favorites.
