WELL HERE IS THE STORY. I ASK THE SELLER THE DAY THE AUCTION WAS ENDING IF HE WOULD TAKE $1625 WITH A BUY IT NOW. HE SAID HE WOULD ASK THE PERSON HE WAS SELLING IT FOR AND THAT HE WOULD PROBABLY TAKE IT BECAUSE THAT WAS A VERY GOOD OFFER. WELL I THINK HE GOT MY MESSAGE LATE AND THE AUCTION ONLY HAD 23 HOURS LEFT AND HE REALIZED THAT HE COULD NOT ADD A BUY IT NOW OR END THE AUCTION. SO ODDLY ENOUGH A BRAND NEW BIDDER REGISTERED RIGHT BEFORE THE AUCTION ENDED AND THE GLOVE ODDLY ENOUGH WENT RIGHT UP TO THE AMOUNT I OFFERED. I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF I GET AN EMAIL TO BUY IT. JUST MY THOUGHT ON THE MATTER. I HAVE SEEN THIS HAPPEN QUITE A BIT ON GLOVES I MADE AN OFFER ON. BUT LIKE YOU SAID I COULD BE WRONG.

How much will it go for?

Postby whipple » October 6th, 2008, 3:22 pm

Greetings, I'm Frank, the seller of the Goldsmith Split Finger Glove at whipplesbooks on ebay, and I wanted to set the record straight that there was absolutely no "shill bidding" for this item, and that the other high offer which I received, one of several which I turned down for the same consideration that applied to each of them, namely that the consignor did not wish to do a Buy It Now sale, was actually for 1,600 even, not 1,625 as stated here previously by another member, so it would hardly have made good sense to have a fake proxy bidder outbid the other party (the glove ended at 1,626) by bidding any higher than necessary, as that would obviously defeat the possibility of selling the glove. Never mind that it would be foolish and transparent to blatantly come up with a newly minted user ID on ebay with zero feedback to conspire in such devious and unscrupulous practices just to make a few more bucks on the deal. The offer of 1,600 even was a very nice and tempting offer, which is what I told the prospective bidder at the time, and I did not say that I was likely to take the offer as he reports here, but as it was not my call to make, I had to go with the wishes of the glove's owner, and if I wanted to sell it outright, should he have given me the okay to do so, it would have been no problem to end the auction early and complete the transaction, as there are mechanisms built into the ebay system allowing the seller to end the auction early should they wish to, at any time. Anyway, if I had wanted to have a shill bid it up, or whatever, I promise that I am capable of being far more cunning than to use someone completely unknown and with no feedback, and just joined that day, to do so. I've been a dealer for a long time, have fairly high numbers (well over 2,000) perfect feedback rating, and am intent on keeping my reputation and livelihood intact to the extent that it is humanly possible. If anyone thinks they know something about me to dispute this, and that there is any credible proof of these allegations of trying to perpetrate a fraud, I'd be happy to hear about it and answer any and all questions in the matter.

Thanks for clearing that up Frank,

When looking at your 2,296+ transactions with 100% feedback it feels safe to bid on auctions like yours. I wish more sellers were like you and let their auction run their course. As for this situation, you have to understand when glovers from the hobby see someone drop a lot of cash on a glove and have very little feedback/a new member some red flags tend to go up. What we should see is that someone with 207 feedbacks took it up to $1,600 and another with 949 took it to $1,000, so the interest for this glove was there. Hats off to the winner and congrats to you Frank and the previous owner. By the way, what is the history on the glove? How did it stay so pristine?

Thanks for that thumbs up, as I was feeling a bit prickly about some of the conjecture that was aimed in my direction over this auction. The buyer of the glove in fact already paid for it, and I checked their bidding history, all of it new of course, and it looks as if they've also won a couple of other fairly pricey gloves to go with mine this weekend, so they do seem to be for real and serious about collecting, maybe just newly using online auctions to buy with, who knows? This glove remained so pristine due to the fact that the collector was something of a fantatic/packrat type, very educated but extremely eccentric to say the least, and everything that he tended to keep over the years, in a wide variety of types of items, was either bagged or boxed or both, and in the case of the glove he had squirreled it away in a bag and a safe smoke free environment, out of the sun and moisture for decades, so that it remained virtually as it was when he obtained it many moons ago. Very cool for me and the consignor who had inherited it from him, and the new owner will doubtless be very happy to have it in his/her collection; regards, Frank.

hi folks. my name is Bert. I'm somewhat new to the glove collecting hobby as well as ebay. my wife opened an ebay account useing my laptop on saturday. ( i guess she was jealous of all the gloves arriving!). She chose scooscoo1 as her user name . (Our kids named our wiener dog scooscoo because he does the "scooty scoot" around the house ) Well, I knew that we were going to be gone most of the day and evening so I chose to put in a bid on the glove in question early that morning. When I logged into ebay, my computer remembered the last used ebay username. we have the same password so I inadvertedly ended up in ebay under "scooscoo1". I made my bid and left the house. When we got home from dinner I was pleased to find out that we had won so we paid for the glove right away.
My wife nor I have ever met mr. whipple. everything was above board. Whipple did the best he could have done for his client and should be respected for that. It may have looked fishy but I can say for sure that it was not.

cheers to all!

congrats on a great glove - you'll have to post pictures of your collection as it looks like you bought some other nice pieces lately as well.

How Much?...etc.

Thanks for the clarification and support from the buyer Bert, also Vintage Brett and others who were willing to remain neutral and objective in the matter of the sale of this beauty. It is much appreciated, as the conjecture was admittedly getting under my skin a bit....maybe I need to grow a thicker skin at this late date. Anyway, just to let you know, the glove was mailed out to the new owners yesterday via Priority Mail, in a box and fully insured to boot, and maybe he and she will go ahead and post some additional pictures and background on the glove and their fast-growing collection once they receive it....cheers to you as well, Frank.
