Update on Vegas glove get together. I need input!

Postby rmiller » September 2nd, 2008, 7:10 pm

Well, I have contacted a few hotels in Las Vegas about a glove get together. I have asked about Mid-March to Mid-April. I have inquired about the best rate for a conference room, and room rates. It depends on how many people will be coming, even just a rough estimate to get it going. So we have a chicken and the egg kind of thing here.

Would you guys be interested in doing this in the spring? We can get rooms for around $55-$60 dollars a night, and that may lower depending on how many people we have. That is for a deluxe hotel right on the strip. The conference room is pricey, but I have a few things in the works there, so we’ll see.

I’m kind of to the point now where I need to know if this is something we would like to pursue, or should we just forget it? :?:

Just curious, what type of get together this is going to be? A meet, great and gamble fun time, a show of sorts where we’ll set up tables to buy/sell/trade, and/or a meeting of the minds where we’ll have an opportunity to truly discuss the glove hobby and its future direction.

Well I think it would certainly be up to everyone- but what I had in mind is setting up tables, buy/sell/trade, meeting of the minds discussing the hobby. What I have told the hotels is that we may want to reserve a big conference room for a day, set up a bunch of tables and do all that stuff. It would be great, if this did happen, to have some of the vintage and modern experts there, and spend some time maybe asking questions, bring some product to show us, etc. Maybe have someone from Tanners and other places come out with some product-Perhaps reps from different glove companies. Of course, at that time of year, those guys may be pretty busy.

I really didn’t have anything very formal in mind-just a big get together, bring a bunch of gloves out, (vintage, modern...everything) meet as many people as we can, do some swapping, lots of looking, etc... Wouldn’t it be cool if we could persuade Kenny Jenkins into coming out with his stuff and doing some refurbs right there. That sounds crazy, I know! Maybe we could make it worth his while if we had enough projects he could do. Heck, I’ve been planning on sending him my TTP, but I’d wait! That kind of stuff may be wishful thinking, I know. Sometimes I get little ambitious in my thinking. But I think if the interest was there, we could have a good time. I’m open to suggestions. Did you (or anyone) have anything specific in mind?

Personally, I don't drink. I don't gamble. But Vegas is very accessable in terms of cheap flights, and lots of hotel rooms. And there is lots to do. Heck, just walking the strip at night is amazing. I just thought it would be fun and with enough time, we could put something good together.

I like the idea in theory, but not sure of the logistics. I have to think about it some more, but my first notion is not to travel across the country with my collection. Would be extremely bulky and I'm not keen to the possibility of damage or loss. Perhaps I'd just bring what I'd like to trade, but then if that's what the majority does, we'd have a show with only mediocre examples. Are others thinking the same?

Personally I think you'd have a much better chance with a regionalized get together. I wouldn't want to lug any of my quality gloves 3000 miles with the chance they'd get lost on the plane or in Vegas. I know that some parts of the country have had regional get togethers and they seem to work out pretty well. (I hoping to have one next Spring now that I have a house). In theory, it would be great to be able to get a whole bunch of glove people together but, as Centerfield said, logistically it is very difficult.

I'm in, I can either fly or drive so just depends on the time of the year. I too however am leary on flying and taking some quality items, my last trip to Vegas I flew out of MT and went to Seattle down as it was the cheapest and one of my bags was delayed by 3 hours.

I'm not a big gambler guy either, but I'm in for Vegas. You'd see lots of gloves from the Southern Cal guys as we are driving distance. Generally speaking, Spring is probably the most expensive time in Vegas but it's good golf weather. A conference room may be hard to justfy the cost if not a lot of people commit to bringing gloves. A possible alternate would be to have one person get a bigger room ... a big suite.

An alternate to Vegas -- but again Vegas works for me -- is Southern California, and you don't need to wait for Spring. I'd be glad to host it and I'm pretty close to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, and the beach (to keep the family busy). We could also plan a trip to Jim Daniel's house and a possible sporting event depending on the time of year.

Should there ever be consensus to do a "Northeast Regional Glove Get Together" of sorts, go ahead and count the Popovich Family over at Dugout Treasures in!

I wouldn't mind where it takes place. The original idea to do it next fall after the world series works best for me.

Really?

You know, I'd try and make it to this, wherever it happens. I'm not sure that it would actually work out for me, but what the hay! It sounds like fun.

I'd only come to meet the glovers and maybe pick up a few gloves for myself if any were for sale. I'm afraid that I don't have much to show yet.

I'd love to see you guys in person. I might have a gin and tonic or nine as well.

Tentatively count me in. I'd really be into it.
